Book: Quest of Fire: The Unending Light
Author: Brett Armstrong
Genre: Christian, High Fantasy
Release Date: December 30, 2025
War has consumed the Lowlands in both Jason and Anargen’s eras. Each teen struggles to keep true to the Quest as the armies led by the dark powers of the Lowlands edge closer to victory.
A secret buried in Ordumair can guarantee that evil Monarch Ilyron destroys the Tower of Light Anargen has striven to defend. And Jason’s brother, Dorian, has found an equally powerful weapon in the mysterious land of Jhi. The ancient threat of dragons returning to the Lowlands threatens to plunge the Lowlands into ruin.
Losses that leave both teens grieving deeply and an ever-diminishing list of allies means they must be willing to give everything to rescue their world from the looming desolation. But they must face the truth that it is still far too little to win, unless they can hold on till the King’s Day arrives.

About the Author

Brett Armstrong has been exploring other worlds as a writer since age nine. Years later, he still writes, but now invites others along on his excursions. He’s shown readers haunting, deep historical fiction (Destitutio Quod Remissio), scary-real dystopian sci-fi (Tomorrow’s Edge series), and dark, sweeping epic fantasy (Quest of Fire saga). Every story is a journey of discovery and an attempt to be a brush in the Master Artist’s hand. Through dark, despair, light, joy, and everything in between, the end is always meant to leave his fellow literary explorers with wonder and hope. Always busy with a new story, he also enjoys drawing, gardening, and spending time with his wife and son.
More from Brett
Quest of Fire is a story told across seven books that took twenty years of dreaming and drafting. A story about the High King, who is a reflection of the King of Kings and the great story He has composed in which we are all taking part. Our God is described as “a consuming fire”*, a fire that also refines us and is shaping us into His likeness. My hope with the Quest of Fire series is that after reading it that fire has caught and blazes in the reader’s heart and gives them the courage to stand firm. Because Quest of Fire is filled with moments in which a vast, terrible darkness seems certain to crush a small group bravely bearing up that light, and they must choose to stand firm no matter the cost. The final entry in the series, The Unending Light, picks up that theme and sees it to its harrowing end with epic battles fought across a world built with rich, immersive detail. Heart warming and rending moments take place that just as much as the dramatic and sweeping conflicts force the protagonists to face the dark and choose whether they will remain in the light and see the Quest of Fire to the end or turn back and flee like so many others around them. So my hope is that others will read and join in the Quest of Fire, because even though it is fraught and hope is fragile, there is one truth that both the protagonists of The Unending Light and we need cling to: “the darkness has not overcome the Light.”** This story, like the great story, is about Him.

Interview with Brett
What is your real-life work schedule like when writing?
Early on in my writing career, I prayed about what it should look like. All-in, part-time, not at all…I still check in with the Lord about it pretty often, but I’ve been operating as a “bi-vocational” writer. That way I don’t fixate on trends, tropes, etc. that are essential to turning a profit in publishing and instead focus on theme and meaning in the stories with as little distraction from their pursuit as possible. The tradeoff is writing is often done in the margins of my day at lunch breaks or on drives to and from work (that’s mostly story dreaming and thinking through things, I try not to type while driving) or late at night after my family is in bed. The latter is starting to shift some as my son gets older and is up later. I’m having to be more attentive for those moments when I can slip off to write. I’ve tried not to let my writing keep me from being the father, husband, or employee I feel like God has called me to be. I’ll be honest, it’s hard. Sometimes I feel like I’m so tired my body is struggling to hold together by its sinews and I wonder why I chose to be a writer. But then the Lord shows me something in a story or a bit of encouragement comes my way that reminds me He led me here and if that road isn’t always easy, that’s okay, because it’s still a road with Him.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
The nice thing about trying to be there for my family amidst writing is there is no shortage of things to do. We grow a garden each year and have been assisting my dad with his garden as he gets older. And my son is an endless source of games—some virtual, some outdoors, some imagined in the house. I feel enormously blessed and privileged to be there for him as he grows and treasure the adventures he imagines for us.
Have you experienced writer’s block, and how do you handle it?
My problem is usually too many projects and not enough time. So, writer’s block hasn’t been a problem I’ve had to wrestle with, but I occasionally have targeted bouts of struggling with a particular passage of a story. Either it’s complex in its composition or themes or emotions and I have to study the landscape a bit to find the best path forward. During those times I’ll try imagining the scene over and over from different angles. That usually helps, but if not, I might bounce between manuscripts and work on another project until the Lord shows me where to go next with the difficult straits I was in.
Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?
I’ve been working on a new fantasy series for a couple years now. I had to hold off on fully drafting it while doing Quest of Fire, but now I have more freedom to finish that story. It’s a space fantasy across worlds but at one point I had planned to write it as a high fantasy like Quest of Fire so it has a lot of that feel to it as well. The advantage of not getting to draft all this time is I’ve put a lot of thought into the main characters, their arcs, and the story world and how it works and is constructed. It’s only a two-book series, but it will definitely be epic and rich in all the best ways that Quest of Fire was and is.
