Interview with Jacqueline

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.

During COVID, like a lot of us, I picked up a few new hobbies, and one that stuck was lifting heavy weights. I joined a program where I was able to work with a coach who taught me how to do front and back squats as well as some Olympic lifts. It was a lot of fun, and I still lift today.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Dedicated, Caring, Encouraging

What book is currently on your bedside table?

Danielle Grandinetti’s Confessions to a Strange,

Is writing your full-time career?

Not yet. I still have my son at home, so writing is part-time for now, but I’m so grateful for the flexibility it gives me to balance family and creative work.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

In a way, yes. From the time I was a kid, I have always loved reading. I loved the adventures that books would take me on, and often didn’t want them to end. So, I would find myself writing my own versions of what happened next. At a young age, I fell in love with storytelling, but I always looked at becoming an author like other kids looked at joining the NHL. It was a great dream, but it would never become a reality. I’m so glad that God had other plans.

What has been your favorite part of the publishing journey?

The first time I saw my book for sale in a store. To see that dream come true was a very surreal moment.

Tell us about your first published book? What was the journey like?

I was nearing forty and chatting with another mom on the sidelines of my daughter’s soccer game when I discovered she was a published author. Of course, I had a million questions! She was so kind and encouraging, and it was through her that I attended my first writers’ conference that fall. It was incredible, the information, the connections, and the feeling of being surrounded by others who loved writing just as much as I did.

Through that conference, I found online resources, and at the time, Twitter was a great place to connect in the publishing world. I began following an editor at Love Inspired Suspense who announced an Author Search event. We had to submit our first chapter and synopsis. I was hesitant, but my husband nudged me to go for it.

The editor gave me encouraging feedback. While the story wasn’t accepted at first, she invited me to revise and resubmit. That book eventually became my debut novel, Targeted Witness. It went through about nine rewrites! Each rejection stung, but the editor’s notes helped me strengthen the story. Over time, I began to see rejections less as failures and more as creative challenges. In the end, all those rewrites made the story so much stronger.

What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?

Usually the plot. I will be listening to the news or even watching an old movie when what I call the story spark hits. My mind starts spinning with all the “what if this happened?” moments. It’s as I play through those events and how the characters respond to them that I start to figure out who they are and what their backstories are. It’s a fun process where sometimes the characters surprise you.

Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?

Yes. That would be Lynelle in Kidnapped For Ransom. She’s the four-year-old daughter of the heroine, and she was inspired by my own daughter when she was that age. My daughter is now off at university, so writing Lynelle was a sweet trip down memory lane. It brought back those tender, funny, precious moments from when she was little.

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

I’m about halfway through writing my next romantic suspense novel, and I can’t wait to share more about it soon! I was also recently a guest on Kelly Jo Wilson’s Christian Romance Podcast. It was my very first podcast interview, and I’ll admit I was a little nervous going in, but Kelly Jo was so kind and easy to talk to. She quickly put me at ease, and it turned into such a fun, faith-filled conversation.
