Sam Anthem has always been a team player, leading his Home Team on secret missions around the world and chasing down bad guys for the U.S. government. But Sam has never had a place to call home or someone to go home to.
Consuelo Zamora has been serving as a missionary nurse, but her work has led her to be forced to work with some South American drug lords in order to provide medicine for the common people. After being rescued by Sam and his Home Team, Consuelo settles into a new position in Olympia, Washington, to work with a community center there. But somehow, trouble always follows her, and Sam Anthem seems to always be nearby to save the day.
When Sam is forced on a two-month vacation, he is introduced to a former covert ops soldier-turned pastor. But the vacation takes a turn when the Home Team comes under attack. As the team fights to stay alive against an unknown adversary, Sam begins to wonder if there is more to life than just the job. With his life on the line, Sam must decide between the job or his newfound faith and possible love.

Interview with Dave

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was 16 and a very troubled youth, my stepmother suggested writing as a way to “get things out” and express myself. I later published a few of those poems. It didn’t really catch on with me until I entered the army as a 2nd lieutenant after graduation from college. A few days into my first assignment, a captain braced me in the hallway one day and said, “Pratt, you can’t speak and you can’t write. Fix it or you’ll fail.”

I was shocked and signed up for the only correspondence course I could find, a Writer’s Digest Institute Short Story writing course. I learned more about writing in one page of that course that I’d learned in high school and college English and creative writing courses. A few months after I completed the course, I published my first nonfiction article for a professional magazine, Army Logistician. I was hooked.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Approximately 1 year, mixed in with church, teaching for a college, family life, grandkids, travel, studying martial arts, procrastinating and general goofing off and, until a few years back, training and owning horses.

What is your real-life work schedule like when writing?

I’m retired for the second time, so I weave my writing in amongst all that mentioned above.

What are your favorite books to read?

Christian suspense, mysteries, some science fiction and fantasy, as well as Christian development, and biographies.

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

I wrote my first novel in 2002, when I was 48, as part of the Writer’s Digest Novel Writing Course.  I self-published it

How do you create your main characters?

I look for inspiration around me. I start with the characteristics and experiences of someone or several people I know and start from there.  The main character in The Home Team, along with the female lead are very close to me and my wife – if you ask my kids. Didn’t mean to do that, but they may be right.

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

The editing that I do before I submit a manuscript to my beta readers and then the publisher. It can be tedious, but it’s well worth it when the book comes out so much improved.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I like to spend time with my wife, kids and grandkids, travel, read and listen to books of all kinds, study and practice martial arts, work in the yard, and spend time in the woods hiking and fishing.

What does your family think of your writing?

I’m not sure they totally understand the affliction, but they put up with it and support me through the process.

Do you base your characters on real people?

Not intentionally, but it’s difficult not to take inventory of the people around me and refer to that list of characteristics, traits, challenges, skills, ambitions, and so on when constructing a character.

Have you experienced writer’s block, and how do you handle it?

Writer’s block occurs when I procrastinate, or just want to get outside and hike, play with the grandkids, or whatever. Sunshine and a beautiful day are a primary cause of writer’s block for me.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

It’s surprising for me to look at a book I’ve written, once its published, and realize that I had a hand in its creation – with the help of beta readers and the amazing editors at Ambassador International. In my heart, it is wonderful and surprising to know how much a role God plays in that process, and to see His hand in the final product.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I have written four novels and four nonfiction books, with another Home Team Series novel due out this coming November. My favorite so far is, without a doubt, The Home Team. I love the story and can feel everything that happens, and feel I know every character like they’re my personal friends.

Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

They can refer to my website, www.DavePrattBooks.com. Information is also available through Ambassador International, Amazon Authors, Book Bubb, as well as through my Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram accounts.

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

The third book in the Home Team Series is due out this November 2025. Books 4 and 5 are in the works at the publisher’s office.

I wish I could say the title came to me through deep thought, but it just sort of appeared one day. I wanted an action-packed novel, but with a title with layers. For example, the Home Team is a family of covert operators, whose relationships make them “family” as much as anything else. So, the term “home’, the place where they all go to be with their family, seems to fit. I also knew what I intended for the main character’s journey to faith, and many of us refer to our churches as our Spiritual Homes. I hope that makes sense.

Thank you for the kind words. Your willingness to spend the time interviewing authors like me means a great deal. Your words help motivate me to keep pushing forward, to create stories that are fun, action-packed, but also carry an important message about Him, and the power of faith even under the most trying, even lethal, times. Have an amazing day!
