Why I Wrote How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month
By Susan U. Neal, RN, MBA, MHS

When I first became an author, I had no idea how much marketing it would take to get my book into readers’ hands. Like many writers, I thought my job ended when I typed “The End.” But I quickly realized that if I truly wanted to reach people with the message God gave me, I needed to learn how to market that message effectively.

Over the years, I discovered what actually works. My book 7 Steps to Get Off Sugar and Carbohydrates has sold over 30,000 copies. In 2022, I reached a personal milestone: my overall Amazon author rank was 4,400. That placed me in the top 1 percent of all Amazon authors. As an award-winning, best-selling author and certified writer coach, I’ve gained a great deal of insight into what works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to book marketing. And I wanted to share those marketing secrets with you.

That’s why I wrote How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month. I want to equip Christian authors with the tools and strategies they need—not only to sell more books but to fulfill their divine calling. This isn’t just about numbers. It’s about spreading the message God gave you and watching Him multiply its impact.

Interview with Susan

How long does it take you to write a book?

I wrote 7 Steps to Get Off Sugar and Carbohydrates in five months because I was a full-time writer. But it took me fifteen months to write 12 Ways to Age Gracefully because I was the CEO of Christian Authors Network and the Christian Indie Awards. It took me a year to write How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month, which is my most recent release.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I had no idea that processed meats were a carcinogen. Here is an excerpt from 7 Steps to Get Off Sugar and Carbohydrates:

The World Health Organization classified processed meats (hot dogs, ham, bacon, sausage, and some deli meats) as a group 1 carcinogen. Processed meats are right up there with tobacco, asbestos, and plutonium!

Avoid purchasing prepackaged lunch meats. If you buy meats at a deli, make sure the attendant cuts slices from a hunk of meat that came from an animal versus the meat being shredded and formed into a mold.”

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve written ten books, nine of them focus on healthy living. As a registered nurse with a master’s degree in health science, I’m passionate about helping others make informed choices about their health. I enjoy diving into scientific research to uncover what truly benefits the body—and what doesn’t. In today’s world, food and product marketing can be confusing and even misleading. I strive to provide clear, trustworthy guidance to help people navigate their wellness journey with confidence and clarity.

One of the favorite books I’ve written is the children’s picture book, Eat God’s Foods: A Kid’s Guide to Healthy Eating. I wanted to help the younger generation understand the difference between real, nourishing foods and the processed products that dominate today’s grocery store shelves. God created wholesome foods—vegetables, fruits, whole grains, meats, nuts, and seeds—to fuel our bodies and support our health. Unfortunately, many children grow up eating boxed and bagged items that are heavily processed, full of additives, and lacking in true nutritional value. My goal is to teach kids to recognize and choose God’s foods so they can develop lifelong healthy habits and honor the body God gave them.

Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

Readers can learn more about me and my books by visiting SusanUNeal.com. There, you’ll find my author coaching services, blog articles, and all of my published books, including How to Sell 1000 Books a Month. I’m also the CEO of the Christian Indie Publishing Association (CIPA), the Christian Authors Network (CAN), the Christian Indie Awards, and the CAN Marketing Awards. Through these organizations, I help Christian authors publish professionally, market effectively, and expand their reach to fulfill their God-given calling.

Any current projects you’d like to tell us about?

Yes! I’m excited about the recent release of my newest book, How to Sell 1000 Books a Month. This project has been a labor of love designed to equip Christian authors with the tools, strategies, and encouragement they need to expand their reach and increase book sales.

This year I became the Director of the Blue Lake Christian Writers Conference—a smaller, more intimate event designed to foster meaningful relationships with fellow writers, editors, and publishers. It is located 30 minutes north of Destin, Florida in March which provides an awesome vacation opportunity. Some new highlights of the conference include free 30-minute mentoring appointments, radio show interview opportunities, and a poetry slam by campfire complete with smores.

Becoming the director of a conference along with the being CEO of CIPA, CAN and the Christian Indie Awards was a huge undertaking. But when God opens the doors of opportunities, I’ve chosen to walk through that door, even with my apprehension, having faith that God will equip me with the people and knowledge I need to do his work on this earth. May God bless you as you fulfill the mission that he has given you.
