Her drudgery hides any blessings for her future, until her childhood friend, Daniel, begins courting Mary with promises to take care of her.

More from Lena

My mother died when I was 7 years old. Back in my growing up years, grown-ups didn’t tell children a lot of things. My aunt, who was living with my mother and father and older brother when I was born, gave me some surprising information when I was in my 30s. After my mother came home from the hospital with me, she had to go back in a little while later. She had surgery to remove a mass of bones and tissue they believed was my twin that didn’t develop.

I found that interesting, because there had been times over the years when I felt as if part of me was missing. I became fascinated with the connections between twins and other multiple births. This fascination planted the seed that became the stories of the McKenna Sisters series.

At one time, there was a lot of discussion about which influenced people more—heredity or environment. These discussions added depth for the story of the triplets. I prayed a lot when writing these books, and God helped me see how to connect the girls when they didn’t know about their other sisters.

They were definitely reared in totally different environments, and Mary’s was the hardest. It was difficult for me to put her through so much anguish.

Interview with Lena

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I grew up in a family where most people wrote, not necessarily for publication, so I thought everyone wrote things.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Various times. When I was younger, I could write a full-length book in less than 2 months. But now it takes longer.

What are your favorite books to read?

Christian fiction. I tend to read more historical than contemporary, but I read both. Various genres, but not horror.

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

I was in my 40s, and I’ve only written one book that hasn’t been published. The first one I wrote was published in 1984.

How do you create your main characters?

I’m actually mainly a seat-of-the-pants writer. After a story has percolated in my mind for a while, I just start writing. The characters reveal themselves to me in the process.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Spend time with my family and friends.

What does your family think of your writing?

My husband was my greatest cheerleader, and my children and grandchildren are proud of my work.

Do you base your characters on real people?

I do use characteristics I’ve observed in people.

Have you experienced writer’s block, and how do you handle it?

Not much. When God told me to become a professional writer, He said if I would be obedient, He would cause the words to flow. You can read about what He used to tell me to become a writer by checking the About me page on my website (http://www.lenanelsondooley.com/) or blog (https://lenanelsondooley.blogspot.com/ ).

How many books have you written?

Over 50.

Which is your favorite?

I love them all, especially A Heart’s Forever Home.

Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

They can find me on social media—Facebook, X, Instagram,

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

I will be finishing the last 2 books in my Love’s Road Home series—A Heart’s Restitution and A Heart’s Honor.  The first 4 books have been published.
