More from Sarah
Years ago, I was travelling a bit before starting a new teaching job. I found myself thinking that it would be neat to visit a few places of the Bible and soon made plans and set off for Turkey. One of my stops was Ephesus; the thought that I was walking in the same place as Paul and his disciples was pretty amazing. I saw the library (now open-air) and the place where the temple of Diana had been.
Having visited and then reflected on the visit while studying the Bible, I realized that the ruins of the port town of Ephesus were a living monument to the difficult living conditions of the believers in Paul’s time. There was much remaining of the Ephesian pagan world, of a time when Christians were a fledgling group that needed the encouragement that Paul offered.
Still today, looking around me it is easy to think that we are still a fledgling group of Christians that need Paul’s encouragement. Division and favoritism are still prevalent today and we are surrounded by nonbelievers. But Paul offered words of wisdom that are still relevant to us today.
You may not visit Turkey soon, but you can connect with the people of the land through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. We can walk a mile in their shoes as we study the encouragement of Paul and experience the power of Christ in our own lives.
Interview with Sarah
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
What is your real-life work schedule like when writing?
What are your favorite books to read?
I really enjoy fiction books to take a break and be entertained. I enjoy Contemporary Christian Romance books, but in the last several months fantasy books have captured my attention. I love how the world building offers rich commentary and question even today’s culture indirectly. I am also a bit of a geek at heart and love grabbing the latest of theological and Christian living books. I make a point of reading books about the focus of a study I’m writing and for my yearly focus (often called Word of the Year).
What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?
If I am completely honest, starting a book can be the hardest part. Sometimes it is so built up in my head or I find the topic that God has put on my heart to be one that is super challenging, so I can be frozen, and a “deer in headlights”. I have tried to address this pattern by also planning time to spend in God’s word and praising him with a playlist before starting my first outline. This always puts me in communication with the Spirit and helps soothe that anxiety of doing the best for Him.
How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
Ephesians is my tenth book and the start of a long series of studies about the epistles. I still like one of my first books the most, Alive Again. This book addresses the hurts that we have all experienced in life and the freedom that God offers each of us. Forgiveness is a topic that we talk about often in relation to us and God but don’t always get personal about in our current and past relationships. This book opens up the verses and invites participants to consider the freedom that we find in God when he touches all the past hurts. I hear from people about this book and how God has touched them, and it is uplifting to hear that God works through words.
