In Nero’s Rome, Calandra helps her father, a renowned sculptor, complete the most significant commission of his illustrious career. But then a catastrophic fire nearly destroys the imperial city, leaving Calandra reliant on a group of Christians-—unusual individuals unlike any she has encountered before. Intrigued by their worship of the Son of an invisible God, Calandra grapples with her mistrust, only to find herself indebted to these believers as they help her rebuild her shattered world.
When Emperor Nero begins constructing his opulent Golden House, the people of Rome grow resentful, suspecting him of starting the fire in order to clear the land for his immense palace. Needing a scapegoat, Nero points at those who follow the Jewish Messiah, forcing Calandra to make an impossible choice between right and wrong, friends and family, love and death.

Hadrian Cronus Tuscus, son of Senator Lucius Cronus Tuscus, waited for his panting servant to catch up. “Lysandros, we do not have all morning to complete our task.”
The slave bowed his white head. “I am sorry, Dominus. I was slowed by the crowd.”
Hadrian softened his tone. “We have only five more visits, then we can get out of the heat. Perhaps we will find a breeze once we cross the river.”
“I doubt it. The insulae block any movement of the wind.” Lysandros consulted the wax tablet in his hand. “After we enter Transtiberim, the first on the list is Titius Justus. The Corinthian.”
Of course—another man convicted of Lex Maiestatis because he had refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods. Hadrian sighed. He did not understand how Titius and his pleasant wife could have been convicted of something as heinous as treason. But his job was not to judge; it was to ensure that the prisoners had not fomented rebellion while under house arrest.
The Praetorian Guard was responsible for all the prisoners in Rome, while the job of caring for the mild-mannered Christians had been relegated to the aediles. In turn, Cronus had charged his son with the duty, though Hadrian did not mind.
The task was one of the easiest he had ever been given.
They crossed the Tiber at a narrow footbridge, then stepped into Transtiberim. Home to most of Rome’s Jews, a decidedly different atmosphere pervaded this district. On Saturn’s day and Jewish holy days, an uncharacteristic stillness blanketed the area while the Jews observed a Shabbat. Experience had taught Hadrian not to visit on the seventh day, for no matter how hard he pounded, his prisoners refused to open their doors.
