Cook on bottom rack.

Aunt Til loved to make fruitcake. The recipe has been in the family for over 120 years.

Interview with Kathryn

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

I’ve written poetry since my teen years, but my first novel was not published until I retired several years ago.

What are your favorite books to read?

I read 2-3 books a week, mostly inspirational historical fiction set in the early 1900s (the era I write about). I intersperse fiction with nonfiction books such as biographies, writing, or spiritual growth. I love a good book, and have to be careful or I’ll stay awake all night reading!

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

God has blessed my husband and me with six children and 18 multiracial grandchildren, not including the spouses or significant others. I’m proud of them and try to set a good example of godliness. It’s a full-time endeavor, but I write during the quiet moments.

How do you create your main characters?

My novels are based on real people and real events, and my author notes reveal some of the research. The hardest part of writing about true characters is to stay within the scope of their lives, like I try not to invent character traits or events, even though, of course, a fiction writer has the liberty to embellish a bit.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Writing is harder than I thought. Thousands of words can be construed in thousands of ways, and to effectively portray the message I want takes a lot of drafts, rewrites, and edits.

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

My next project is a WW2 historical narrative. I spent several weeks interviewing my father-in-law about his service at D Day+1, Battle of the Bulge, etc. Two months later he died of Covid at 96 years old. I’m grateful for those recordings and notes, and anxious to get started writing, although I think it will be the most difficult book I’ve written yet.
