Keeping his identity secret from her clearly didn’t protect her. Now he must defy the Agency and fly to Iraq to rescue her.

Leila Amato escaped Iraq a decade earlier, only returning in her worst nightmares. But those nightmares have come true when she finds herself captive and all alone, or so she thinks until she sees her identical twin sister.

Michael tracks Leila to a desert compound, but his rescue mission goes awry when he discovers her sister needs to escape as well. His detailed strategy can only ensure one woman’s safety. Now they’re on the run, trying to get out of the country before their enemies track them down.

But Leila’s kidnapping is only one small part of a larger plot—one that endangers thousands of lives—and now he can’t trust anyone. Not even the woman who’s stolen his heart. A woman who’s been keeping secrets of her own…

About the Author

Robin Patchen is a USA Today bestselling and award-winning author of Christian romantic suspense. She grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, the setting of her Nutfield Saga books, and then headed to Boston to earn a journalism degree. After college, working in marketing and public relations, she discovered how much she loathed the nine-to-five ball and chain. After relocating to the Southwest, she started writing her first novel while she homeschooled her three children. The novel was dreadful, but her passion for storytelling didn’t wane. Thankfully, as her children grew, so did her writing ability. Now that her kids are adults, she has more time to play with the lives of fictional heroes and heroines, wreaking havoc and working magic to give her characters happy endings. When she’s not writing, she’s editing or reading, proving that most of her life revolves around the twenty-six letters of the alphabet.

More from Robin

I spent a week this year serving refugee women on the Greek island of Lesvos. Along with helping to distribute food and clothing, I gave hand massages. It seems like such a little thing, but it was powerful.

Many didn’t speak English, and I found it difficult to connect even with those who did. What do I have in common with women escaping war or oppression?

But I could perch on a tiny stool at their feet and rub lotion on their hands. I didn’t know their stories, but God did. So while they chatted with friends in languages I couldn’t understand, I prayed silently. As I did, God stirred in me a deep love for each one.

Imagine the courage it must take to leave everything you know—your home, your community, in some cases, even your family—to seek freedom. Imagine how desperate or afraid or, frankly, hopeful a person must be to attempt it.

The heroine in Rescuing You did just that. An Iraqi who came to Christ as a teenager, Leila feared her family would discover her secret and felt she had no choice but to run away. Resettled in Germany, away from her mother, father, and twin sister, she built a life for herself and fell in love.

And then someone snatched her back to Iraq.

Rescuing You is about a man determined to save the woman he loves. It’s about a woman willing to risk everything for the freedom to…

…Love the man she chooses

…Live a life of purpose, and mostly…

…Worship the One True God

It’s easy to take our freedom for granted—and to forget that true and lasting freedom isn’t political or social but spiritual. Christians are free in Christ no matter what their society looks like.

But what an incredible blessing to live in a free country.

Rescuing You barely scratches the surface of the refugee crisis. It’s mostly about a man and a woman and whole bunch of terrifying villains. Even so, I pray it’ll stir in you a deep love for refugees seeking freedom worldwide. Pray for them and for the nations they’ve escaped. Our world needs Jesus.

Interview with Robin

What book is currently on your bedside table?

I am reading “Sunrise” by Susan May Warren. I’ve become a fan of Susie’s novels. In fact, I blame her and her Minnesota Marshalls series for the fact that I wrote a book set in Iraq, Turkey, and Greece. I pulled it off, but when it got hard (like when I was googling things like, are there bushes in the Iraqi desert?) I blamed her. (She’s an amazing author and a good friend, so she knows this—and laughs at me.)

What has been your favorite part of the publishing journey?

Meeting readers and other writers. Unlike a lot of novelists, I’m an extrovert. I love to get to know people and hear their stories, and I’ve gotten the opportunity to meet some amazing folks I never would have met if I weren’t a novelist.

Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

I ministered to refugee women in Lesvos, Greece, last year, and I referenced a lot of what I learned and saw in Rescuing You. In fact, that trip inspired Leila and her journey. One more thing: Leila doesn’t know a lot of American idioms. I think it’s great fun when Michael uses a phrase, and she has no idea what he’s talking about. It adds levity to otherwise serious moments.

Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?

Leila and her sister, Jasmine, because they are refugees. When I was in Lesvos, I met a refugee from Afghanistan. She looked about eighteen, and she was an amazingly talented artist. She had a sketchbook and showed me some of her sketches, and wow. I was blown away. I thought about all those people, trapped in the camps, waiting for visas. Even when they got their visas, they’d struggle to survive. I thought, how much talent must be hidden away in refugee camps? What gifts is the world missing because those good people don’t have the freedom to pursue them? This story is about one woman’s journey—well, one woman and her sister. But there are thousands upon thousands of people fleeing oppression all over the world. Pray for them, would you?

What is the key theme and/or message in the book?

Both Michael and Leila have to learn to trust God—and release the reins to let others help. He’s a spy, so he wasn’t exactly trained to trust or work on a team. She was raised in a society where men have control over women. She was trained to obey—and bucks against that. They both need to learn that God is in control, and sometimes, He uses other people to help us.

When an author experiences first hand what it is like for refugees and takes time to be God’s hand extended to them; it brings the book to life. As a reader, I appreciate Robin Patchen doing just that and pray that God would bless her efforts.
