More from Jennifer

I loved writing this book. There were days that words poured out of me as though a dam had broken. Other days I stared at the screen until my eyes felt crossed and only touched the keyboard to text my husband how absolutely uninspired I was.

The day before I clicked PUBLISH, I reread the entire book cover-to-cover, word-for word and just as I had the first time through, I smiled, I cried, my heart swelled, and it shattered into pieces. Then it was gently put back together as I was reminded of the hope that is always waiting for us, no matter what.

One of my favorite quotes from the book:

“…if you will let God redeem your losses, you might find that he restores you, too…”

Interview with Jennifer

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I have always loved writing. I was scribbling really bad poetry on paper as early as fourth grade. I actually stumbled across some of it when we cleaned out our attic a few years ago and it was embarrassing and hilarious to say the least. And no, it will never see the light of day again! HA! HA!
But, writing has always been a natural way for me to process my thoughts and emotions. I entered and won multiple writing and oratorical contests all throughout middle and high school. I did not, however, know that I could write a book and love doing it until 2021. And now, I can’t stop!

Do you have any suggestions to help someone become a better writer? If so, what are they?

Understand that your first draft is going to be awful. Honestly, it has taken me three books to accept the fact that if I spend all my time self-editing as I write, I will get overwhelmed and frustrated. If I sit down and let the words pour out I will have so much more to work with in the end. And that’s where critique partners, your editor, and beta readers come into play.
Once I got over the idea that I wasn’t going to produce a final manuscript in one try, not only did my work get better, but I became more confident and productive.

So, let go of the notion that you have to get it right the first time. You can’t and you won’t so don’t try! That shift in mindset is very liberating.

What’s your favorite part about being a writer? Research? First Draft? Editing?

This is such a great question! I’ve never answered it before so thanks for asking it! I love research. That’s true for my writing and life in general. I’ve always been curious by nature so finding answers is something I’m really good at. I also like KNOWING things – anything and everything.
For No Matter What I spent hours researching Cybersecurity, the military, FBI procedures, even Dr. Ekman’s emotional awareness research. There were days I just knew I was probably on some kind of watchlist based on my Internet searches. Thankfully, I’m still in the clear, but my browser history is testament to my love of research even if I’m not writing a book!

What do you think makes a good story?

Realistic and relatable characters are crucial to a good story. If I can’t connect with the characters, the story is basically white noise to me!

What project are you working on now, and how do we find your books?

I am currently writing a series called Real American Country. It starts with Jordan and Rachel’s story in Fall When You’re Ready that releases February 1. The two are childhood best friends who realize as they get older there are feelings there that are different from those of “just friends”. Of course, life throws some curveballs their way and choices have to be made.
The series revolves around characters who have made it onto a reality Country Music singing competition called Real American Country, hence the series name.
My books are easily found on my website, jcarrwrites.com and also Amazon/Kindle/Kindle Unlimited.
