About the Author

Cathy McDavid

NY Times and USA Today bestselling author CATHY MCDAVID wrote her first book at sixteen. The self-illustrated children’s story featured a young girl whose lack of responsibility nearly resulted in the demise of her pet fish. It’s quite possible the book was an autobiography, but Cathy’s not telling. She wrote her second book, and first romance, at nineteen with the help of a portable Smith Corona typewriter. One never knows how the unrequited crush on a college professor will affect their eventual career. These days, with over 57 titles and 1.6 million books in print, she still incorporates a little of her own life in each story. A lover of all things western and former avid horsewoman, her stories include riding, ranching, and rodeo because, well, who doesn’t enjoy a good cowboy romance? Mother of grown twins and married to her own real-life sweetheart, Cathy is living her dream penning heart-stopping suspense thrillers and heart-touching family dramas for Harlequin.

Interview with Cathy

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.

I love musical theater and was in several productions during middle school and high school. My biggest role was Mother Superior in The Sound of Music.

What was your favorite book when you were a kid? Did it play any part in your writing style today?

I read every horse, dog, and cat book I could get my hands on when I was a young kid. I even volunteered in the school library during grade school just so I could get first pick of the book. Of course, I loved all the Walter Farley and Marguerite Henry books. They fueled my love of horses, which led to a lifetime of owning and riding horses. And as a writer of cowboy romances, I can definitely say, those early books played a big part in my eventual writing style.

What book is currently on your bedside table?

I belong to a neighborhood book club and have just started reading Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. I’ve only just started the book but am enjoying it so far. I love his book, A Man Called Ove, so I’m hoping this one will be good, too.

What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?

What comes first for me is the external conflict, so I suppose my answer is the plot. Sort of. It’s usually a question that pops into my head, such as what would happen if a guy and a gal were caught in the Superstition Mountains during a raging monsoon storm while also attempting to escape illegal miners intent on killing them? From there, I wonder what kind of interesting people would fit into this story and what terrible something happened in their past that has shaped them into who they are today. Yes, there has to have been something in their past because that’s what creates the romantic conflict and enables them to have a story arc.

Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

Mountain Storm Survival is a story of second chances. Both characters have been given second chances in their lives. As teens, Rand was left injured in a rodeo accident and not expected to ever walk again. He beat the odds, and while left with mobility issues, he can lead a normal life. Kate was one of the people responsible for his accident and served serval years in prison. While there, she found faith and turned her life around. Now, they just need to move past their “pasts” and give each other a second chance.

What were the key challenges you faced when writing this book?

Without a doubt, the biggest challenge for me in writing this book was describing realistic action scenes, especially during the flash flood. I very much wanted to put the reader in the moment, with all the tension, fear, frustration, and energy. I hope I accomplished that.

Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

My next release is a sweet romance from Harlequin Heartwarming, The Rodeo Cowboy’s Return, available July 24, 2024. This is book one in my new series, The Rocking Chair Ranch, and has a charming secondary romance subplot bound to make readers smile.
