Trouble in Dry Springs by Kristina Hall
About the Book

Even the peaceful town of Dry Springs is not without trouble.
When Eliza McCoslin’s brother sends for her, she exchanges war-torn Mississippi for Dry Springs, Texas. Settling into a new way of life proves difficult though, despite the arrival of the man she’s long admired.
Jesse Carrigan comes to Dry Springs seeking work and a place to start the ranch he’s dreamed of ever since his parents lost their farm. What he doesn’t expect to find is the woman he’d like to court—or his former colonel on the run from a deadly threat.
Given the circumstances keeping Jesse and Eliza apart and the danger looming on the horizon, he and Eliza find themselves facing the loss of future love—and life. When trouble comes to Dry Springs, who will be left standing?

My Thoughts
Trouble in Dry Springs is a sweet historical romance with a western flair. I enjoyed the story. It was an easy read with a few unexpected twists. The main character Eliza deals with abandonment issues and a low self-esteem. I would have liked to see her grow from these struggles a little more. While the plot involves a saloon and a gambling addiction, it’s never glorified or dug into very deeply. Trouble in Dry Springs is a great story for those looking for a historical fiction without too much angst. The story involves gun fighters and death threats, but the scenes were never frightening. I enjoyed the characters of Eliza and Jesse, but wasn’t fond of Eliza’s brother—he was not a very nice guy at times. I felt for Eliza and all the trouble her brother put her through, both physical danger and emotional stress. Overall, I recommend Trouble in Dry Springs to readers of historical fiction, romance, westerns, and I think it would be an acceptable YA read as well.
