About the Author

The smiling teacher. That’s what her students called her. How did this dedicated teacher end up as an author? A spinal cord injury took her out of the high school classroom. After seven years of healing, she asked the Lord what He had for her. Now, thirty-seven books later, Marisa is still enjoying the direction He sent her when God opened the door for her to begin writing.

Marisa’s sweet romances often are set in her home state of Wisconsin. Growing up, she loved hearing stories about her family who pioneered in that state. Those stories, in part, are what inspire ideas for her books.

Though she’s from Wisconsin, Marisa and her husband of thirty-four years live in Saginaw, Michigan. They have two grown children and a precious three-year-old granddaughter, Hunny Junebug. She’s been Marisa’s best physical therapy and keeps her moving.

As a girl of about ten, I remember holding a glass 7-Up bottle for the orphaned piglet. My grandpa attached a black rubber nipple and had me feed it—just like Fern in Charlotte’s Web. Unlike Fern, I knew not to name it or grow attached. It would be sold when it reached 40 pounds.

That memory came in handy with Priscilla’s Piglet. I wondered what I could add to keep my heroine at the farm after she decides the hero is not her perfect match. The memory prodded my brain. Who doesn’t love a baby that is in need—even if it’s a baby pig! It seemed the perfect fit for this story.

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.

I struggled as a child and teen to read chapter books and novels. In fact, I still do sometimes. Because of a reading disorder, I was twelve before I read a book all the way through. While that made it harder, it didn’t stop me from earning a bachelor’s degree in English and later a master’s in teaching reading.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

I’m nurturing, emotional, and optimistic.

Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

The hero of the book suffers from PTSD after taking part in the Sioux War. While he and Priscilla, the heroine, want to be married and have a family, they are unsure how his violent dreams can be overcome. This throws up a roadblock to the relationship. After all, how can she even share a bed with him?

What were the highlight or key challenges you faced when writing this book?

To me, historical details are essential in a book like this one. I want the reader to feel as if she or he is in the past, to let the setting become real for the reader. This meant returning again and again to my research about the Battle of Little Bighorn as I wrote about the hero’s nightmares and time in the 7^th Cavalry.

What is the key theme and/or message in the book?

Both the hero and heroine find they must adjust their expectations. Life is very different for the hero after his experience as a member of the 7^th Cavalry. For her part, the heroine is led to expect a very different man from the one who meets her at the train.

Along with realigning expectations, this is a book about finding faith. While her preacher father is hypocritical, Priscilla has cemented her own personal and real relationship with Christ. She marries a man who is struggling to reach out and take hold of that same faith. He’s willing but feels so unworthy.
