Author Interview with Lynn H. Blackburn

Welcome!

Introducing Lynn!

Lynn H. Blackburn loves writing romantic suspense because her childhood fantasy was to become a spy, but her grown-up reality is that she’s a huge chicken and would have been caught on her first mission. She prefers to live vicariously through her characters and loves putting them into all kinds of terrifying situations while she’s sitting at home safe and sound in her pajamas!

Unknown Threat, the first book in her Defend and Protect series, was a 2021 Christy Award finalist and her previous titles have won the Carol Award, the Selah Award, and the Faith, Hope, and Love Reader’s Choice Award. Malicious Intent, the second book in the series, released March 2022.

She is a frequent conference speaker and has taught writers all over the country. Lynn lives in South Carolina with her true love and their three children. You can follow her real life happily ever after by signing up for her newsletter at LynnHBlackburn.com and @LynnHBlackburn on Bookbub, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.

Interview with Lynn

What was your favorite book when you were a kid? Did it play any part in your writing style today?

There’s no way I could choose a favorite. Anne of Green Gables and Emily of New Moon were definite favorites. As were The Chronicles of Narnia. And I still own my entire Janette Oke collection and from the notes inside you can see that I started receiving them as birthday gifts somewhere in my tween years. As for how those books play into my own writing style, I think every book I’ve ever read has helped me create my own personal grasp of language, how story flows, and what I want to read in a story to find it satisfying. I know there are some writers who aren’t big readers, but I definitely wouldn’t be the writer I am today without the influence of the thousands of stories I read as a child and into adulthood.

What book is currently on your bedside table?

Fatal Code by Natalie Walters, Redeeming Your Time by Jordan Raynor and The God of the Garden by Andrew Peterson.

Is writing your full-time career? Or would you like it to be?

Not even close to full-time. I have three children. My oldest has disabilities, and I homeschool the younger two. Maybe someday I’ll write full-time, but for now I’m happy to be where I am!

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

No! I didn’t even consider it until I was in my mid-30s. I’ve always been a reader, and I was good at writing in school, but the idea of taking the stories in my head and writing them down never crossed my mind!

What has been your favorite part of the publishing journey?

The friendships I’ve made with writers all over the country and internationally. Writers are the best!

If you could travel anywhere or any when for research where/when would you go?

There’s a place in Iceland where you can scuba dive between the tectonic …I feel sure I could come up with a way to use it in a story!

What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?

The characters. I have no idea what the plot will be until I start writing. I generally have a good understanding of what put my characters in the situation they are in, but how it will all play out? No clue! I discover what happens with my characters.

What were the key challenges you faced when writing this book?

I was writing this novella while also writing the 3rd book in the series and editing another novella set in this story world. I learned very quickly that I do NOT do well with multiple stories going at the same time. I kept getting the scenes confused when I switched from one story to the other. I eventually realized I was going to have to finish this novella and then move back to the novel because I couldn’t keep bouncing back and forth!

Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

The best way is to visit my website and sign up for my newsletter! I’m also active on Instagram and Facebook.

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

This novella is part of the Defend and Protect series. There’s another novella releasing in November, and the final book of the series will release in March of 2023. After that? Well…I’m hoping for a new series that will be set in the mountains of Western North Carolina, but that is still in the very early proposal stages, so we’ll see!

I too have disabilities so I know its means when a parent cares more about me than a job so that is awesome and I can see how God is blessing through her books. Just started reading them. Have all the dive teams and Unknown threat, wanting to get malicious intent. I do enjoy her books, they keep me going while still keeping God first. And her interviews are good everytime I have read or seen them. Glad I started reading her books, too bad couldnt meet her in person, she seems so awesome of a person.
