About the Author

Choice 4 (1)

Historical Christian Romance author, Jennifer Lynn Cary, likes to say you can take the girl out of Indiana, but you can’t take the Hoosier out of the girl. Now transplanted to the Arizona desert, this direct descendant of Davy Crockett and her husband of forty years enjoy time with family where she shares tales of her small-town heritage and family legacies with their grandchildren. She is the author of The Crockett Chronicles series, The Relentless series, and The Weather Girls trilogy as well as the stand-alone novella Tales of the Hob Nob Annex Café and her split-time novel The Traveling Prayer Shawl.

More from Jennifer Lynn

The Traveling Prayer Shawl is actually a tribute to the wonderful women I’ve had the pleasure of making shawls with for the last ten plus years. We have a group that has remained faithful though some have had to leave, and new faces have joined. I thought this would be a book where there would be several points of view, sort of like how it is when we meet one Saturday per month. I even asked the girls when this idea began to churn if they could give me some character ideas.

Then one morning this scene came to me and wouldn’t leave. I wrote it out and sent it to my critique group. They thought I might be on to something.

Follow that with one of my prayer shawl girls asking if I was still interested in a character idea. Of course I said yes, and she handed me a fully fleshed out supporting character—Dericka.

I hadn’t planned on anything romantic but apparently my characters had other ideas. This story couldn’t get itself written fast enough.

The cherry on top was when another of my prayer shawl girls shared about a pattern her grandmother had designed that was published back in the 1960’s. With her permission, I include that pattern at the end of the book—an actual prayer shawl to crochet.

You will also see a prayer that is included with the shawl in the book. That is the same prayer that is given with each shawl from our Needles of Hope group. It was written by my dear friend, Pastor Lori Brown and used with her permission.

Crocheting is a relaxing craft for me and one I came to only a few years ago. My sweet grandmother tried to teach me to crochet, then gently suggested I stick with knitting. Ha! But my husband’s cousin came to visit and accepted the challenge, finally helping me to see what had been so elusive. Now I prefer it to knitting.

Though The Traveling Prayer Shawl is a stand-alone and not like my other books, I am currently working on another stand-alone split-time and have included the first chapter at the end of the book. Hope you will enjoy it and that you will try out my friend CeCe’s grandmother’s prayer shawl pattern.

Abundant blessings!

Interview with Jennifer

What book is currently on your bedside table?

I’m currently reading Julie Carobini’s Otter Bay series and am in book 2 – A Shore Thing. I love the rhythm of her writing and I feel like I’m right there in the story.

Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

I’d wanted to write this book for a long time as a way to honor the women who make prayer shawls. We’ve been crafting together for more than a decade. Do you remember Eva Marie Everson and Linda Evans Shepherd’s Pot Luck Club series? I loved how they took an ensemble cast and made them all distinct. That had been my plan for The Traveling Prayer Shawl, especially after we made one that was passed around and added to before being sent across the country to a friend who’d moved and was having a difficult time. But then one day I had this scene play out in my head and had to get it onto paper. About the first six or seven paragraphs of what is now the book. I sent it off to my Pencildancer partners to see what they thought. With a few adjustments, I had the start, and the story took off.

Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?

I have special feelings for all three, to be honest. And as a grandmother, I understand Kate. But then last year, in less than a month’s time I was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (that is under control right now, Praise God) and in a bad car accident with broken bones and a hospital stay. Gave me new insights for both Morgan and Cami. However, can I share a secret? I didn’t like Morgan when I first started writing her story. But as I got to know her, sympathy grew, and then I really began to love her. She’s a fighter.

Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

The easiest way to keep up with me is to go to my website – http://www.jenniferlynncary.com
and sign up for my newsletter. You’ll get a free novella (loosely based on my parents’ restaurant in Kokomo, Indiana) plus some other goodies. I keep my readers apprised there and they get a heads up before anyone else. I also do reviews and interviews with other authors that are a lot of fun plus the occasional giveaway. You can always contact me through my website.

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

Oh, yes! I am currently polishing up another split-time set in AZ titled The Forgotten Gratitude Journal – you can get the first chapter in the back of The Traveling Prayer Shawl. And, I’ve started a spin of series to my Weather Girls trilogy. It was so fun to be back in Kokomo in the early 1970s. So for this series, The Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe and Venue, each book is a stand alone and named for the title of a song of the same era that has a girl’s name in it. The bridge book is Cheryl’s Going Home. Then, the official first book of the new series is Judy in Disguise (both are in editing stage now and are planned to launch this summer), followed with Sylvia’s Mother, Runaround Sue, and Cracklin’ Rosie (she’s a chiropractor—Ha!) to name a few. And I’ve got a lot more planned.

Thank you for letting me share!

It is always interesting to read how characters develop as an author is writing a story. It seems like God is writing the story through them.
