More from Karen

Sunflowers and Suspicions is the third full book in the Pine Springs series. While you may discover some spoilers from the previous books, this book can be read as a standalone. I wrote Sunflowers in Suspicions because I loved the characters so much, I wanted their stories to continue!

This was a fun book to write. Julie was a minor character in the previous books in the series, and her story needed to be told. Living in the shadow of a glamorous twin sister hasn’t dampened her enthusiasm for life, but her self-esteem suffered a hit, making it difficult to believe a guy could be interested in her instead of her sister. Most of us have been there! God promises He’s given gifts to all His children, but if our gifts don’t seem to measure up to those we perceive others have, we lose our joy.

Granted, Julie has a lot more than that to deal with – her twin sister goes missing, and her former boss may know more than he’s letting on. Couple that with feelings of inadequacy since all her friends have special guys and the fact the guy Julie starts to fall for seems more interested in her sister, and it’s easy for her to feel second rate. God never wants that for us. While Sunflowers and Suspicions is a tale of suspense and romance, it also taught me a thing or two about accepting myself for who God made me to be. I hope it does the same for you!

Interview with Karen

What book is currently on your bedside table?

I’m reading When I am Weak by Staci Stallings. It’s a contemporary Christian romance. I like to read the same type of books I like to write! It’s book 2 in her Grace series. The books are described as epic-novels because they’re much longer than the standard book in this genre. I love the longer story because it gives us a chance to get to know the characters more deeply. It’s not a simple boy meets girl story. Both characters have complicated pasts and must find their way back to God and become the people God called them to be.

What has been your favorite part of the publishing journey?

My favorite part is connecting both with readers and with other authors. To connect with readers, each week I send out a short story to my mailing list, and I love the responses I get. Most of the people on my list I’ve never met, and I love hearing they are being touched by the words God has given to me to write. I also love the opportunity I’ve had to connect with other Christian authors. My publisher is Pelican Book Group, and through that group, I’ve gotten to know several writers. It’s a wonderful bunch who help promote each other’s books, offer advice, and pray for one another. It’s fantastic to be part of that kind of community.

Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

The blurb tells you a woman is looking for her missing twin, but it doesn’t tell you about their complicated relationship. Julie and Jade may look the same on the outside, but they are two very different people. Julie is the girl next door. She’s blessed with dear friends and a strong relationship with the Lord. She’s always been envious of Jade who is more worldly and glamorous and always seems to get the guy. Jade, on the other hand, is envious of Julie and the deep relationships she has in her life. Their story shows the danger of comparing ourselves to others. God created us all to be different, with different gifts, for a reason!

Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

I wrote Sunflowers and Suspicions as a closing for the Pine Springs Series. While I have ideas for turning some of the secondary characters’ stories into future novels, I wanted to write a standalone novel with a new set of characters. I’m currently writing a novel where the two main characters act together in community theater. There are two stories in one – the story of the characters, and what is happening in the play. As the book goes on, the scenes on the stage start to reflect what is happening in the characters’ lives. I’m looking forward to deciding what happens next. That’s my favorite part of writing – seeing how the story plays out. I have an idea of the plot line, but the details only come about while I write. I’m already thinking about the secondary characters and considering who might break out into their own novel. Who knows, this might end up being a second series! If only I had time to put all my story ideas on paper!
