More from Valerie

Story ideas invade my mind at the oddest moments. One day as I sorted laundry, I thought how interesting it would be to begin a novel with: “I’d been in the Witness Protection Program for three years when my identity was compromised.”

The idea bubbled and churned in my mind for a while. When I sat down to outline possible scenarios, the ideas hit me like an avalanche. Why was she in WITSEC? Who outed her? I scribbled as fast as I could—yes, I’m behind the times and use paper and pencil to plot my novels.

And so IRO was born. The International Retrieval Organization is my topnotch investigative service, with unlimited resources and experienced operatives.

Weep in the Night is the first novel in my Stolen Lives Trilogy. IRO agents are the heroes or heroines in the series. Which agent will save the day?

Interview with Valerie

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.

Sometimes when people hear my accent, they ask where I’m from. I say, “The south.” They usually open their eyes wide in disbelief and respond, “Really?” Then I add, “Just not on this continent.”

I was born in South Africa and moved to Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, when I was a kid. Both countries are former British Colonies, and many residents spoke the ‘Queen’s English’, no offense meant. Although my accent has been softened by living in Texas for more than thirty years, remnants of the British influence remain. I tell people I’m bilingual. I can say, “Don’t daahnce on the graahss.” And I can say, “Don’t dance on the grass.” But no matter how much I practice, my y’all still sounds like you all.

What has been your favorite part of the publishing journey?

I have a three-part answer. Hitting ‘send’ for the email to the editor after many revisions and hours of prayer over the manuscript is the first highlight. Next, receiving a reply with a contract to publish is near the top of my list. And third, strange as it may seem, I really enjoy reading the comments and suggestions from the editor which always make sense. Why didn’t I recognize that plot hole or notice that discrepancy?

I think the key in this process is having my ideas and writing validated. I had many negative experiences in high school English classes. I don’t think any teacher ever thought I’d be able to write an A worthy essay, let alone be published one day.

Can you share with us something about the book that is not in the blurb?

Bowen has to convince Sadie that he is a legitimate agent sent to keep her safe. He uses a code word that only she will understand. I don’t want to give away too much, so all I’ll say is I chose the word a young student of mine used. It became a part of my husband’s and my vocabulary. Without the use of this code word, Sadie will not believe Bowen.

What is the key theme and/or message in the book?

Forgiveness is a theme that runs through all my novels, whether it’s forgiving of self or others. Many of us also struggle with the idea that God forgives us. I’ll summarize a scene where Bowen asks Sadie how she overcame her blaming God for her loss.

She says, “I realized God wasn’t responsible for the ills that befell me. We have freedom to choose good or evil. God doesn’t force us to make that choice.”

“But if we’ve chosen evil, will he take us back?”

“A verse in the book of Revelation says Jesus stands at the door of our hearts and knocks. It’s up to us to open that door and invite him in. He is always ready to forgive the truly repentant.”

                    “Even me?”

Although she still struggled with a weak faith, his question strengthened her resolve. “Even you, Bowen.”

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

After a personal loss and a move from Washington State back to Texas, I’m finally ready to get back to writing. My next novel is under my publisher’s umbrella of ‘My Mother’s Secret.’ Anna’s mother worked in genetic research. The secrets she kept from her daughter would fill a book!
