Author Interview with Janet Morris Grimes

Welcome!

Introducing Janet Morris Grimes!

Janet Morris Grimes may not have realized she was a writer at the time, but her earliest childhood memories were spent creating fairy-tale stories of the father she never knew. That desire to connect with the mysterious man in a treasured photograph gave her a deep love for the endless possibilities of a healing and everlasting story.

Janet is now a writer/music reviewer for Nashville Arts & Entertainment and Crossroad Magazines. She has featured stories in several anthologies, including The Spirit of Christmas and Sweet Tea for the Soul: Real-Life Stories for Grieving Hearts.

A wife of one, mother of three, and Tootsie to four, Janet currently writes from her quiet two-acre corner of the world near Elizabethtown, KY. She has spent the last few years preparing to introduce her novels and children’s stories to the world.

Stories that stretch your heartstrings. An unforgettable combination.

Interview with Janet

  • Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.

I’m a new author, so I approach my readers as if we’re best friends, reading through a book together. I love hearing their response to a scene, or getting a message saying “she better be okay after all of that.” It lets me know we’re in this together.

  • If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Yikes! How dare you limit a writer to only three words? Lol.

Observer. Deep. Empathetic. I literally stand in the shoes of each one of my characters so I can properly interpret their feelings, and I hope that shows.

  • What was your favorite book when you were a kid? Did it play any part in your writing style today?

I read through all the Nancy Drew books several times. They got me through many a summer, and also enhanced my sleuthing and lipsticking skills.

  • Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Yes, but I was afraid to dream it or say it out loud.

  • What has been your favorite part of the publishing journey?

The response from readers. They love my characters and my town as much as I do.

  • What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?

Solomon’s Porch was one character and all plot. The rest came as he introduced me to each one of his friends. I think that’s how it goes for me – I meet an imaginary person who is hurting or broken, and I must find out why and how to help.

  • Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

It keeps wanting to visit the porch of other genres. Mystery, southern fiction, inspirational. It’s about a church serving as the hub of a town, but it’s reveals much more of the town than the church. It’s got intrigue and suspense, and happens in flashbacks, so it covers several decades. Mostly, it’s about connecting and letting other people into your own story. What exactly do you call that?

  • Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?

Absolutely. Solomon Thomas is an incredible, gentle soul who sees through to people’s hearts. He reminds me of my dear father-in-law. We lost him eight years ago, but the stories people shared at that funeral proved to me how much simple acts of kindness matter over a lifetime.

  • Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

My website: https://janetmorrisgrimes.com/

  • Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

I’m working on a series of read-aloud children’s books. The first one is called “Do Your Best, Tess!” It’s about a little girl who never finishes what she starts; based on a true story of a middle-aged writer who has a bamillion unfinished projects, but I had to change the name to protect the guilty. (Me!)

There are five more like that one that focus on issues children face. “Be Brave, Dave!” “Be Fair, Clair!”

It can be difficult to remember all the rules, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun.

Oh, and Solomon really deserves a sequel. You’ll see. The town of Ginger Ridge has many stories to share.
