It’s up to a K-9 handler and her canine partner to stop a bomber before it’s too late.

That means relying on the dams’ supervisor—an ex-boyfriend Bristol never thought she’d see again. Hopefully Remington Jones has grown up from the rakish charmer she knew in her academy days. Because lives now depend entirely on them…

It’s an environmental terrorist who wants the dams gone, and his bid to set the waters free has lethal consequences. When he sees Bristol and her K-9 working to stop him, he sets his sights on them. Can they evade him in a lethal game of cat and mouse and protect their cities from devastating destruction before the clock runs out?

More from Jerusha

Hi, readers! For those of you who are familiar with my suspense novels, you know I love to interweave fast-paced suspense with powerful character journeys of redemption. I got to do just that in my romantic suspense novel, Rising Danger.

But what I especially loved about writing Rising Danger was the chance to feature a canine hero. Bristol Bachmann, the heroine of Rising Danger, partners with Toby, an explosives detection K-9, to stop a bomber from unleashing terror on the Twin Cities.

As a lifelong lover of dogs, I’ve always been fascinated by working K-9s like Toby. Getting to portray this black Labrador’s heroism in Rising Danger was so much fun.

I also feel that writing about Toby and the other K-9s in this tale who are part of the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency was a way to honor the heroic dogs I’ve had in my own life. No, I haven’t known any working K-9s, but I’ve shared my life with dogs who were heroic in different ways.

Take Lancelot, my first Leonberger. Lancelot was one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever known. With his huge size, he was a true gentle giant. At an early age, he became terribly afraid of strangers and new places. I worked with skilled trainers to help him battle his fear, and he did have some improvement. But he would always struggle with meeting new people or visiting locations away from home.

Even so, he never stopped fighting against his fears. He continued to get better the more he fought. And while he battled his fears, he taught me how to battle mine.

Then, the worst battle of all commenced when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Doctors gave him only three to four months to live—a frightening and devastating death sentence for the dog of my heart.

But God had more to teach me through Lancelot. This courageous dog fought cancer as hard as he had fought his fears. He taught me how to find joy in every moment of life, even when there’s pain or sadness. He taught me how precious and powerful love can be. And God used him to give me unforgettable evidence of God’s loving providence and sovereignty at work.

Because God had a different plan for Lancelot. God gave me the gift of over 1,000 more days with my heroic dog.

Right up to the end of his days, Lancelot remained my hero. I’m so pleased to begin a series of books with prequel Rising Danger that feature K-9 heroes who, in different ways, remind me of the heroic dogs I’ve been privileged to love.

Interview with Jerusha

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I first knew I wanted to be a writer when I wrote a short story for a competition for kids. The story came to me fast, and I wrote it rapidly, loving the wild creativity of the experience.

When I finished the story, I gave it to my mom to read. And that was the moment that changed everything. Because when she reached the end of the tale, she cried.

I was stunned, and totally blown away. The ending of my story was sad, and I had meant it to be touching. But I, as a young girl, had the power to make an adult cry through writing a story?

That was the first moment I realized the incredible power of story. By wielding a “pen,” writers (especially of fiction) have the power to touch people at the deepest level, to influence, inspire, challenge, encourage, and comfort.

I realized then that I wanted to learn to harness that power and use it for the greatest good—spreading the Good News of the Gospel in all its facets and reaching people for Christ and the glory of God.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

My latest one is needing a steady supply of candy cherry slices from our local confectionary while I outline, write, and do all the things. In fact, I think I’ll have some right now… 😊

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Everywhere! It seems that God really wired me for story because ever since I was a child, I’ve seen the world in terms of story. Just watching kids playing in a yard at a house, I would wonder what their lives were like, what their relationships with each other and parents were like, and my mind would fill in the answers with the beginnings of stories.

As an adult, I continue to find that inspiration for stories is all around us in the people we meet, the places we go, experiences we have and that we learn about from others. We just need to be aware and keep our imaginations active to grab onto those stories just waiting to be told!

Do you have any suggestions to help someone become a better writer? If so, what are they?

Read, read, and read! But don’t just read randomly or mindlessly. Read with intention. Read writing in the genre you want to write in and study those pieces.

Read the best authors in your genre, but also read new authors or lesser-known ones. You may find hidden gems to learn from, or you may find writers who need to improve their craft.

Either way, you can learn from the reading if you pay attention to what works and what doesn’t in everything you read. This works well with movies, too, if you watch films in the same or similar genre that you’re writing.

Once you study these creative works and determine the positives and negatives, then apply what you’ve learned to your own writing. You’ll notice your writing will improve, and you’ll have more conscious knowledge that will enable you to consistently write well.

What project are you working on now and how do we find your books?

I’m currently working on launching my next romantic suspense novel, Hidden Danger!

Rising Danger is the prequel to the Guardians Unleashed Series, which officially begins with Hidden Danger. This installment features the women and dogs of the elite Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency that readers met in Rising Danger.

Cora Isaksson, the Phoenix K-9 technologies expert and narcotics detection K-9 handler, is the focal point of Hidden Danger, as she stands between her brother and the drug cartel that wants him back. When the cartel targets Cora, she has to team up with brooding DEA agent Kent Thomson and her teammates at the Phoenix K-9 Agency to end the cartel before it ends her.

Hidden Danger releases November 8 and is available for pre-order now! You can find Hidden Danger and all my other books at www.JerushaAgen.com/books.
