Let’s get to our interview, shall we?

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Oh, my that’s a complex question.  In grade school and high school, I really enjoyed my classes that had writing stories as part of the curriculum and was encouraged to write by my college creative writing professor. It took me several years out of college before I decided to actually give it a go. I’m really glad I did, though, it took my ten years of learning and submitting before I sold my first novel.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Hmm. Well, a few years ago I broke my wrist and had to learn to dictate my books. But I discovered the only place I felt comfortable talking the story aloud was in a bubble bath. LOL So now I take bubble baths almost every day J

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

From all sorts of sources. I scan headlines and news articles for ideas as well as play the ‘what if’ game with several writer friends. I belong to several writer groups online where we brainstorm and can ask for help with research information.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I do agility with my dog. It keeps me active, and it has really been a source of bonding for us as a team. And did I mention it’s really fun!

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

When I first started writing with the intent to submit, it was a learning curve on how to tell a story from start to finish. Especially when writing a suspense story. Learning where to drop clues and red herrings to keep the reader interested and how to keep the action high and the tension taut. I think with every book I try to do better with these elements.

What’s your favorite part about being a writer? Research? First Draft? Editing?

Well I have two favorite parts—plotting and editing. I love to plot and build characters. This brings me great joy. Then being done with the book and editing and polishing it so it shines gives me great satisfaction.

What do you think makes a good story?

Compelling characters that readers care about coupled with an interesting plot.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

A writer!

How do we find your books?

Tell us about your novella for the Dangerous Pursuits Collection.

My novella titled, Protecting the Heiress, came about while I was hiking Smith Rock in Central Oregon. I love to hike and let my mind wander. The logline came first:

A reluctant heiress needs the protection of the intelligence officer who broke her heart if she is to make it to the reading of her father’s will—alive.

When I returned home, I grabbed a notebook and wrote out the basic plot (remember, this is one of my favorite parts of writing) Then I massaged it a bit and then began writing.  I’ve enjoyed this story and I hope readers will as well.

Time is running out…

On a damp Seattle night, Cecily Fairhaven is rescued from a mugger by the man who broke her heart, Malcolm Cruz. When she learns it’s not a coincidence that Malcolm has shown up out of the blue and that her life is in danger, she must set aside her hurt and anger to trust the man she once loved. But is she really safe? Or will she suffer another broken heart when he leaves?

US Air Force Operations of Special Investigations Agent Malcolm Cruz received a cryptic message begging him to protect Cecily. To honor the man who’d been instrumental in his career, Malcolm wasted no time traveling across the world to safeguard the only woman he’s ever loved and to ensure she makes it home to deal with her father’s estate.  But as the threats against her escalate and his feelings for her resurface, he begins to wonder if either of them will come out of this unscathed.
