Let’s get to our interview, shall we?

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I decided I wanted to be a writer in the fourth grade. I had planned to be a secret service agent, but when my mama pointed out I could get shot, I dropped that line of work! But I loved books and reading. Our teacher assigned an English project that involved writing a short story. I was hooked. I started writing short stories and selling them on the playground for a quarter each. Fun times.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I have a wicked sense of humor and that sometimes comes out in my writing. (And sometimes gets edited out by my editors 🙂

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

I read a lot of news articles and get ideas there, or I see a person who looks intriguing and try to figure out their story. I put two opposite ideas together and try to make my characters figure things out. I can get ideas just walking through Wal-Mart.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I love to read, of course. I like walking on the beach. And I enjoy baking.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

My characters. They always surprise me.

What’s your favorite part about being a writer? Research? First Draft? Editing?

Love research. Love the first draft. After close to 100 books, I’m finally learning to enjoy editing, too!

What do you think makes a good story?

Something in a character that gets to the reader, some trait or heartache or past experience that readers can identify with.

Tell us about your novella for the Dangerous Pursuits Collection.

I’m excited about The Winter Pearl. It’s set in New Orleans during Christmas, which gives it a gothic/noir kind of feel.

When antique jewelry store owner Hannah Dupree mistakenly receives a rare and priceless pearl necklace, someone is out to kill her and get it back. Retired Navy SEAL Luke Pearson comes into the shop and finds her being held at gunpoint by two men. He manages to help her get away, but soon he’s trying to keep her alive. As they get to know each other, they both realize love is just as priceless as a pearl.
