I’ve joined my blogging friends for a new facet of my blog, called His Encouragement, inspiring scriptures shared each Thursday. My hope and my prayer is that these scriptures each week will bless your heart and encourage your soul.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 KJV
Welcome to the Christmas Season! The fifth season of the year. I felt led to look closer at this verse in Isaiah chapter 9 through the month of December. There are five names of God found in this passage and I’d like us to examine each one.
The mighty God
“The mighty”
According to the dictionary, mighty means having, characterized by, or showing superior power or strength: of great size; huge: great in amount, extent, degree, or importance; exceptional:
According to the Strong’s concordance, gibbôwr, means powerful; by implication, warrior, tyrant:—champion, chief, excel, giant, man, mighty (man, one), strong (man), valiant man.
“God”
The dictionary’s definition of God is the one Supreme Being, the creator and ruler of the universe.
According to Strong’s concordance this word is ʼêl, pronounced ale; and it means strength, mighty; especially the Almighty (but used also of any deity):—God (god), goodly, great, idol, might(-y one), power, strong.
His name shall be called, “The mighty God.” Looking at these definitions, they bring two things to mind. The first being the very important fact that the messiah, Jesus Christ, is God. He’s not just like God. He is God. Jesus is the Supreme Being, the creator and ruler of the universe.
The second thing this makes me think about is that God is mighty. He’s powerful beyond our imagination and His strength is beyond our understanding. He’s the one who parted the Red Sea and held back the Sun. He spoke the world in existence. As powerful as a hurricane or tornado is, He is more. He created them. He is like a mighty soldier or a stead-fast oak tree. He is of great size; exceptional!
If he is powerful enough to speak all things into existence, then He is more than capable of facing any problem I may encounter in my life.
How big is your God?
“My God is so big. So strong and so mighty. There’s nothing my God can not do.
