Today on First-line Friday’s, I am sharing the first line to Book 5 in the Daughters of the Mayflower series, The Cumberland Bride. I have loved each book so far and I can’t wait to dig into this one soon.

Tennessee, Spring 1794                       Bean’s Station

“My father used to tell a story,” Kate murmured as she wrote, quill scratching against the page, “of how he and his fellow Hessians sailed down Hudson with the British, preparing to attack Washington and his forces. When they came under fire, he and the other men of good, devout German stock, broke out singing hymns, believing God would preserve them. Colonel Rawdon commenced to mocking them for such simple faith. And that was the beginning of the end of my father’s faith in the British.”

Our main character’s father served for the enemy!  Sounds like an interesting story ahead.

Now it’s your turn! Share with us a first-line!

About the Book:

In 1794, when Kate Gruener’s father is ready to move the family farther west into the wilderness to farm untouched land, Kate is eager to live out her own story of adventure like he did during the War for Independence and to see untamed lands. And she sets her sights on learning more about their scout, Thomas Bledsoe. Thomas’s job is to get settlers safely across the Kentucky Wilderness Road to their destination while keeping an ear open for news of Shawnee unrest. But naïve Kate’s inquisitive nature could put them both in the middle of a rising tide of conflict. Is there more to Thomas’s story than he is willing to tell? Is there an untapped courage in Kate that can thwart a coming disaster?

    Happy Friday!🍁🍁

My first lines come from a book I’m very excited to be reading soon, Resistance Women by Jennifer Chiaverni……..

The heavy iron doors open and for a moment Mildred stands motionless and blinking in the sunlight, breathless from the sudden rush of cool, fresh air caressing her face and lifting her hair. The guard propels her forward into the prison yard, his grip painful and unyielding around her upper arm.

Have a great weekend and happy reading!💕📚📖🍁

Happy Friday! My first line is from “Oceans Apart” by Clare Revell, included in the set “Somewhere Beyond the Blue”:

“Oliver Voight checked his passport for the third time.”

I know Cumberland is a place, but honestly … when I see the word “Cumberland” my mind automatically adds “sausage”. Because Cumberland sausages are the best.

I’m featuring Pathway to Peace by Elizabeth Maddrey on my blog, and I’ve just picked up That’s When I Knew by Laurie Tomlinson. Here’s the first line:

“Bless her heart. Chelsea Scott’s sales director had no idea what she was getting them into.”

I’m guessing this is that Southern meaning of “bless her heart” which means anything but!

“Where are the lamb?” Ernestine asked when she and I caught up to the rest of the group at the pasture fence.
