Do you struggle to relate to God in the Old Testament?

The Bible Companion Book 2 can help. Its simple one-chapter-a-day format lets you engage with Scripture without the pressure of schedules, homework, or heavy reading loads. Short daily readings and thought-provoking questions help you recognize God’s faithfulness even in your most difficult journey.

Though filled with unfamiliar symbols and rituals, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy hold treasures—the great promises of God. They show us the lengths to which God goes to be in our daily lives. Hard-to-read passages come alive as we travel with Israel to the Promised Land and discover the same God who guided His people in ancient times guides us today. If you want to know what God is like and what matters to Him . . . if you question His love for you . . . if you wonder how believing God can change your life, these books of the Law will speak to you. For personal and group study.

Book Excerpt

Leviticus 1: THE BURNT OFFERING

The Lord called Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting.

Leviticus 1:1

As Leviticus opens, God no longer speaks to the people out of fire on the mountain, but from the tabernacle (Ex. 19:16–25; Lev. 1:1). He no longer keeps a distance, but dwells in their midst. The book introduces five offerings that will allow God to continue to dwell with His people. The first is the burnt offering. Burnt offerings were common in religions of the ancient Near East. (Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob all gave offerings to Yahweh). In Leviticus, God reveals new details about this sacrifice and how He wants Israel to carry it out. He instructs all the people because the person bringing the sacrifice participates in its offering (vv. 2–9). Notice the give-and-take between the lay person and the priest. The offerer presents the animal and slaughters it. The priest applies its blood. The offerer skins the sacrifice and cuts it into pieces. The priest places those pieces on the fire. The offerer washes the internal organs and legs, and then the priest places those pieces on the altar. Burnt offerings are offerings of dedication.
