This happened once in a while. People didn’t want to go out front to check the opening hours. Connor headed to the side door and peered out. The person he saw brought him back to that fateful day.
Dad looked him in the eye through the mirror and mouthed, “Run!”
The man turned and looked into his eyes.
In an instant, his heart raced, his hands clammy. He managed to mutter, “We’re open at ten.”

In the dimly lit hotel bar, shadows seemed to dance along with the low hum of conversation and the clinking of glasses. Simon Roth spotted Javier Jimenez on a barstool. Javier’s presence was unmistakable, even from a distance. His frame, usually poised and commanding, slumped slightly over the counter, a clear sign of the weight he carried on his shoulders. The haphazard state of his hair and the absence of his customary tie painted a picture of a man unmoored, adrift in thoughts that offered little solace.
“Hey, Javier. How’s it going?” Simon’s voice broke through the ambient noise, a beacon of familiarity in the semidarkness.
