More from Keon

How would you like to get a personal letter from someone? Most people like real mail, especially if its from a person who truly cares about you. What if that letter not only shared their affection but it revealed the answers to some of life’s most profound questions? God has written you such a letter, the Bible! Actually, the Bible is a collection of all God’s written messages to you.

This fact was impressed on me as I read the New Testament book of Hebrews. It opens with a bold statement. God had given messages to humanity in ancient times through prophets and angels. Finally, God sent Jesus, the Ultimate Messenger with the ultimate message that is vital for every person.

This captured my attention and made me wonder how the previous messages in the Bible led up to Jesus and His message? Researching that question took me on an exciting journey of discovery, encouragement, and warning in God’s Word. The result is my book, Have You Heard from God Lately?  It summarizes major Bible themes to help you navigate the amazing Book. I hope it inspires you to open God’s letter and realize just how much He cares for you!

Interview with Keon

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Right after college I started a regular newsletter to friends and family.  However, I didn’t try writing a book until 9 years later in 2003.  My first attempt was for a science fiction story that did not get very far, but I knew I wanted to be a writer at some point. Years later in 2017, when I finished the draft of my first book, Seeking the Lord, I could actually think of myself as a writer even though the book would not be published until 2020.

How long does it take you to write a book?

It takes a long time for me to get books done because I still have a job. Typically, I write in the early morning after praying.  After reviewing where I had left off and thinking about what to write next, it can be time to go to work.  So, getting just a paragraph or two written in a day really extends the writing process. On weekends I can get in a good couple of hours writing, which is satisfying.  Writing this way, it took two years to write my first book and 18 months to write Have You Heard from God Lately?

What are your favorite books to read?

I enjoy reading several types of books including history, historical fiction, science fiction, and a bit of mystery. All of these stimulate my imagination as I wonder what it was like or could be like to have lived in the time period or be involved in the story. However, the Bible is my favorite book of all time. Of course it has history, science, and mystery (in wondering how God will work out everything) which makes it easy to ponder the people and imagine interacting with them. However, even better than that is the spiritual truth and encouragement that are seen in God’s interactions with people and His messages for us today on each page of the Holy Book.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

When I’m not writing, I enjoy activities with my family. It could be bike rides, visiting museums, or simply playing games. From board games to thinking games the interaction with my loved ones is very rewarding. Even making a mess in the kitchen is enjoyable when we get to eat the fruit of our labor. The clean up, however, is not so enjoyable.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I was very surprised to learn about seeking God over a lifetime while writing Seeking the Lord, a 30 Day Start to Your Journey. I knew we should invest in our relationship with our Creator each day, but seeing 22 people in the Bible seek God in different ways in different scenarios and at different ages made me think about life, not just a day. Of course, we live life one day at a time, and sometimes we need extra help just to make it till tomorrow. Yet, seeing Abraham begin to seek God as a senior citizen, Bezalel seek God by doing his job, Ruth seek God in widowhood, and others reminded me the Lord is worth pursuing over a lifetime because He is with us today and forever.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve written two books. My first is Seeking the Lord, A 30 Day Start to Your Journey. It examines true stories of how 22 people in the Bible searched for and found God. My second book is Have You Heard from God Lately? 30 Messages from Heaven to You helps readers discover the answers to life’s all-important questions, such as: Who is God?  Does He care about you? and Why is your life not perfect?  The second book is a great introduction to God and Bible, but the first, Seeking the Lord, is probably my favorite because it is an in-depth study about walking with God for lifetime.
