My Thoughts
The Last to Know was only the second book I’ve read my Mary J. Alford, (Don’t Close Your Eyes, book 1 of the Hallowed Halls of Quantico series being the first), and I enjoyed it very much.
I enjoyed solving the case along with the detectives, though I beat them to the answer. However, there is an unexpected twist near the end that tickled my “wow, that’s really creepy” bone. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I will say that I enjoyed how “close to the heart” Alford made the situations in both books.
My favorite element though had to be the physical “wound” Alford gave the heroine in The Last to Know. It was totally unique and gave the character a fear and an imperfection that you seldom see in romantic suspense. It gave the characters a different kind of obstacle to acknowledge and overcome.
This series is a little creepier and more graphic than I’m used to, but it wasn’t gruesome or overwhelming. It could be described as gratuitous—there’s a lot of murders—but that’s what happens in a book about a serial killer. It’s disturbing to know that there are real people out there that are that twisted.
