More from Rachel
Have you ever lost something you treasured?
A few years ago, I had an unexpected surgery and had to take off my wedding rings before the procedure. Everything went fine, but after I came home, my fingers were swollen, so I could not put my rings back on right away. I put them away for safe keeping, but several weeks later, when I started feeling better, I went looking for my rings and couldn’t find them. I panicked at first. Could I have forgotten them in the hospital and just thought I brought them home? All kinds of scenarios ran though my head.
Have you ever done this? Put something treasured away for “safe keeping” and then forgotten where the safe place was? I have to admit, I do this a lot.
To make a long story short, after some searching, I finally found my rings in a jewelry box in the bottom of my sock drawer. I was so relieved. While my rings are a material possession, the meaning behind them is what was most troubling when I thought they were lost. They symbolize the special relationship my husband and our promise to each other. My engagement ring is also a family heirloom from my husband’s side of the family, so it really was a treasured keepsake for me.
In my new book, Treasured Keepsakes, Jayson Kamuela doesn’t realize what he’s lost until it’s almost too late. He has been too busy climbing the corporate ladder to reach his dream job to realize his marriage has slipped through the cracks.
Leah still loves her husband, but through the years, they have become more like strangers. When she comes to her breaking point and realizes Jayson has no intention of changing, she feels trapped. Leah escapes to the only refuge she can think of— her cousin’s home on Suamalie. Will this couple be able to recover the treasure of their marriage before it is lost forever?
Interview with Rachel
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve enjoyed writing since I was a child. I created a little fictional series of picture books about a family of cats and mice who became friends. Making up stories was one of my favorite things to do. However, I never really thought about becoming an author until I became an adult. While pregnant with my second son in 2013, I had the idea my first Christian romance novel. After that, I attended my first Christian Writer’s Conference. Since then, I’ve published over 25 books.
What are your favorite books to read?
I love historical Christian romance the best. My first favorite series was Love Comes Softly by Janette Oak. My mom gave me the series when I in middle school and I couldn’t put the books down. I still have them on my book shelf today and often re-read them. I think I enjoy them so much because they transport me to another place a time in history where things were simpler. The themes of faith and family are also something I really love about the books.
How do you create your main characters?
Sometimes my characters are completely made up in my head or they could be inspired by people I’ve known. However, if they are inspired by real people, it is only a small part of their personality that I use in the story. For example, in one of my stories the inspiration for a character came from my grandpa. He was a very wise man of God who loved nature. I used this for my character, but there were differences, like the character was a pastor and a fisherman.
What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?
I think the most difficult part of writing a book is the editing process. Allowing my ideas to flow onto the page is the fun part, unless I have writer’s block. Whenever I finish a book, I want to move on to the next story idea. I think that is the reason it’s so difficult to go back and edit a book I’ve already written. However, I know it is a very important part of the writing process and needs to be done. I find it helps if I let a book rest for at least a month before going back to edit it.
