Interview with Heidi

What book is currently on your bedside table?

I’m currently reading (electronically) an ARC of Underneath the Christmas Tree by Clare Revell. As an author and editor, I mostly read ARCs. 😊

Is writing your full-time career? Or would you like it to be?

I am thankful to be a stay at home mom. However, I don’t write all day. Some days, I don’t even write. But on weekdays, I try to work on a writing task daily. Today, I am working on marketing and writing blog posts. Other days, I may attend write-ins with other authors. I don’t have a set schedule.

What has been your favorite part of the publishing journey?

My favorite part of the writing journey is networking with other authors and attending write-ins. I am a goal-oriented person, so I like the sense of completion when a book is finished and the publisher emails me the galley proof and cover files.

What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?

Usually the characters come to me first but not always. Even if the plot comes to me first, the characters will help to drive the plot. In my current work in progress I went back and rewrote several scenes because the female lead is in law enforcement, and I didn’t want her to come off a helpless damsel in distress. I wanted to make sure that my characters are equally matched in fight scenes. I’m not really sure why I start off with characters, but I tend to do so.

What is the key theme and/or message in the book?

The main themes are of trusting God no matter what and about finding one’s worth in Christ.

Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

I’m active on my Facebook page and Twitter. I post less frequently on Pinterest and Instagram. Readers can subscribe to my newsletter on my website.

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

My current work in progress is a three-book series involving EPA CID agents who solve environmental crimes. For now, I’ve loosely titled the series Queen City Heroes, because it’s set in Cincinnati, Ohio. The books feature agents Chance McPherson and Stacey Sanderson. Stacey is strait-laced, by the book, and a Christian. Chance is cocky, unconventional, a foodie, and not on the best terms with God.

I also have spent some time researching the Great Black Swamp in Ohio. I have an idea for a dual-timeline romantic suspense novel.
