Some weird and random facts about me include:
I would love to have a malamute and name it Indy.
I rode horses as a child and had an Appaloosa named Kiddo. I rode English and eventually wanted to learn more about dressage.
I speak some Spanish and have been to Mexico multiple times as a teen on mission trips.
When I was a baby, my parents were missionaries in Canada. I have seen pictures from that time period, but I have no memories of living there.
When I was nine, a car hit me while I was riding my bike and spent a week in the hospital.
When I was eighteen, I rolled my vehicle, and paramedics had to use the jaws of life to get me out.
I currently have six pets: a dog and five cats.
I love warm weather. My husband teases that I’m solar-powered.
I’m a bit of a science and grammar geek. I studied biology in college and taught science for a while. Later, I edited science documents and obtained my Master of Technical Communication.
What was your favorite book when you were a kid? Did it play any part in your writing style today?
As a child, I enjoyed reading the Christian-themed Sugar Creek Gang series. The books involved mysteries, and I enjoy writing suspenseful/mysterious Christian stories.
Is writing your full-time career? Or would you like it to be?
Besides being a stay-at-home mom, I write but also recently started line editing for Scrivenings Press.
Have you always wanted to be a writer?
I have wanted to be a writer since I was thirteen. At the time, I wrote a Civil War play and my own fanfiction-type “sequel” to Indiana Jones—just for fun. I loved acting in high school, and I grew up in Southern California where acting/moviemaking/films felt like part of the culture. I leaned toward writing Christian screenplays—assuming I would share the Gospel through Christian movies. But God had other plans.
I never would have dreamed I would write Christian books. I didn’t even like reading that much after high school. Reading the classics sort of turned me off to reading. I regained my love of reading years later, when I could choose what I could read. I would encourage parents to introduce children to a wide variety of literature—fiction and nonfiction. If your child likes Lego, find books on Lego. If they like magazines or graphic novels, try that. They don’t have to read chapter books every day. As long as it’s wholesome, let them read it!
Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?
The heroine, a librarian named Carlotta Hartman, is a Jane Austen fan and has named her houseplants after characters from Pride and Prejudice. Mary and Jane are ferns. Lydia and Kitty are spider plants. Elizabeth is a Christmas cactus.
Where can readers find out more about you and your books?
I’m active on my Facebook page and Twitter. I post less frequently on Pinterest and Instagram. Readers can subscribe to my newsletter on my website.
Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?
My current work in progress is a three-book series involving EPA CID agents who solve environmental crimes. For now, I’ve loosely titled the series Queen City Heroes, because it’s set in Cincinnati, Ohio. The books feature agents Chance McPherson and Stacey Sanderson. Stacey is strait-laced, by the book, and a Christian. Chance is cocky, unconventional, a foodie, and not on the best terms with God.
