A Visit to Borough Market

Whenever I skip across the pond, I make it a point to stop at the Borough Market for some great meals. This area was—and is—a popular place to shop and an absolute must-see for food lovers. From grocers, fishmongers, cheese sellers, and butchers to all kinds of ethnic eats, it’s hard not to want to sample everything. My personal favorite are the buddha bowls.

Believe it or not, Borough market has been in operation for the past thousand years. Yes, you read that correctly. It actually began as a bridge, constructed in 990. But let’s fast forward to the Victorian era, shall we?

In the nineteenth century, a railway viaduct was constructed through the middle of the market, which brought in more people—but also brought in more noise, soot, disruption, and crime. In such a hotbed of activity, it’s easy to imagine cutpurses and pickpockets of all sorts.

And that’s the perfect scene for a certain con-artist turned investigator to meet with an informant. In The Bride of Blackfriars Lane, Kit Turner is up to her old shenanigans, much to Jackson’s chagrin. You can visit Borough Market along with her in this wild ride through Victorian London. It’s just one of the many stops in a city that never gets old.

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.

I’m a homesteader hippy wannabe. My husband and I left the asphalt jungle last fall and moved down to rural Missouri in the foothills of the Ozarks. This summer, instead of fighting traffic, I’ve been battling cabbage worms and squash bugs. Sure hope I can figure out how to can!

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Anglophile, Boxer Lover (the dog, not the briefs), Indian Food Aficionado

What book is currently on your bedside table?

Beneath His Silence by Hannah Linder. I’m reading this rather gothic regency tale for endorsement and boy howdy, is it a good one! Be looking for this one on bookstore shelves.

Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

This whole series is all because I went to a drive-in on a hot summer night. I don’t even remember what movie I went there for, but I do remember that I wasn’t thrilled about having to first sit through a child’s animated flick. Still, I’ll watch pretty much anything as long as I have popcorn, and boy, am I glad I had a large bucket.

The movie turned out to be Zootopia, a tale about a bunny rabbit who had a dream to go to the big city and whip it into shape. Her first day there she meets with a con-artist fox who takes advantage of her. Through a series of events, they are forced to work together to bring down the big bad guy who’s ravaging the city.

That’s when a lightbulb went off. What if I took that story outline and set it in Victorian England and had human characters instead of animals? Bingo! That right there is the birth of the entire Blackfriars series (because yes, there will be a third and final sequel for the set).

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

I’ve always got projects to share! I’m just wrapping up my next release, which will be the second in the Of Monsters and Men series. In my previous book, Lost in Darkness, I featured author Mary Shelley of Frankenstein fame. This new tale highlights Bram Stoker, who wrote Dracula… which ought to give you a clue as to which monster I’ll tackle in Man of Shadow and Mist. Here’s a blurb:
