For 2020, I have chosen Isiah 41:10 as my personal verse. This lead into a theme for this year’s “His Encouragement” posts. Each week, I will look at another “fear not” Scripture of the Bible. I hope that as we journey together through these verses that we all will learn a little more about trusting God and rooting out the fear in our lives.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
John 14:27
John chapters 14-17 are some of my most favorite passages of Scripture. There are so many beautiful thoughts there straight from the lips of our Savior that I am overwhelmed by his love and care for us.
The word troubled in this passage means “to agitate” and…
- to cause one inward commotion, take away his calmness of mind, disturb his equanimity
- to disquiet, make restless
- to stir up
- to trouble
- to strike one’s spirit with fear and dread
- to render anxious or distressed
- to perplex the mind of one by suggesting scruples or doubts
All these things are the exact opposite of Peace, which means a “quietness, tranquility, and rest.”
Jesus says, “Don’t allow your heart to be anxious , distressed, or perplexed,” because He gives us peace.
So what makes God’s peace different from the world’s peace?
The peace of this world is temporary. God’s peace is eternal.
The world’s peace is based on circumstances. God’s peace transcends circumstances.
The world’s peace is based on human knowledge. God’s peace comes from Heavenly wisdom. (From Scripture)
The world’s peace comes from trusting in yourself. God’s peace comes from trusting in a Supreme, All-powerful, All-knowing, Eternal Being, who loves us in spite of ourselves.
Who are you looking to for peace today? God or this world?
