For 2020, I have chosen Isiah 41:10 as my personal verse. This lead into a theme for this year’s His Encouragement posts. Each week, I will be looking at another “fear not” of the Bible. I hope that as we journey together through these verses that we all will learn a little more about trusting God and rooting out the fear in our lives.
Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
Lamentations 3:57 KJV
Jeremiah, also known as the weeping prophet, wrote the book of Lamentations. Apparently, this guy had a lot of things to be sad about, even the name of the book is depressing! Chapter 3 begins with Jeremiah feeling like God has deserted him. He goes on and on about the terrible way God has treated him, in his mind at least. But part way down the chapter, we see Jeremiah have an attitude switch. He recalls God’s mercies and compassions. They fail not. They are new every morning.
From this point on, the chapter takes on a different tone. Jeremiah begins to express how good God has been to him. He realizes his need for God and he begins to call on him in prayer.
In a time when everyone has to maintain “social distancing” my eyes were drawn to the words, “thou drewest near” and I was blessed by this reminder.
God is NOT in lockdown. Our God is omnipresent. He is everywhere, all at the same time. That means…
He is with you as you participate in worship services online.
He is with you as you search the empty grocery shelves for food to feed your family.
He is with you as you begin homeschooling for the first time. (As a veteran homeschooler, I speak from experience.)
He is with you as the bills are coming due but there’s no money to pay them because you’ve lost your job.
He is with you as you awkwardly begin working from home.
He is with you as you face loneliness and isolation if you live alone. (And even if you don’t.)
He is with you as you lay in a hospital bed without support because visitors aren’t allowed.
No matter what your circumstances are right now in this crisis, God is willing and able to draw near. Call on him and he will bring peace. Fear not.
